Robert “Bob” Ellsworth Amos, 82 formerly of Weirton, WV passed away peacefully at Grace Manor of North Park in Allison Park, PA on September 29, 2024, with his daughter, Heather and son, Robert by his side.
Bob was born July 9, 1942, in Steubenville, OH, however, he was a resident of Weirton, WV since birth through April 1, 2022. Bob was the son of the late Robert Franklin Amos and the late Bernice Leah Amos. Bob was also the brother to the late Janice Thomas and the late William “Bill” Amos. Bob is survived by his younger sister and twin to William, Bonnie Amos - Ware.
Bob was preceded in death by the love of his life, Martha “Skip” Lynne (Allen) Amos. Bob first laid eyes on Skip in Follansbee Middle School as she was standing on the stairs with her beautiful, long brunette hair in a ponytail and wearing a poodle skirt. Bob went off to the US Navy after High School where he and Skip would later begin exchanging letters. Those letters blossomed into a beautiful love story. Bob made Skip his bride on June 20, 1964, in Paris, PA. Bob and Skip would later buy a farmhouse on four acres on Wylie Ridge Road in Weirton, WV (Swearingen Hill) May 1968. Bob drew up his own architect plans and did a total renovation, added on an addition, and built a three-car garage in 1975. They were very proud of their home and would later name it the “Amos Estate”. Bob would say it is where they “lived to love and loved to live”. There they grew their family and shared many wonderful memories. Bob and Skip enjoyed many outdoor activities with their children over the years, which included snow skiing, water skiing, biking and many wonderful family vacations. Bob and Skip were very talented making stained glass and would later sell pieces in a Follansbee, WV Boutique. Shortly after Bob’s beautiful bride was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2001, Bob and Skip fulfilled a dream, driving cross-country on his Harley Davidson, where they spent over a month out West. Bob loved his Harley and enjoyed doing charitable motorcycle runs. Bob and Skip were devout Christians and attended church services faithfully. Bob truly enjoyed reading books about history and read his bible every day. Bob loved western movies and his favorite actor and hero was John Wayne.
Bob was a Radarman 3rd Class Petty Officer in the US Navy during the Cubin Missel Crises. He served onboard the USS Preble (DLG-15) and the USS Sandoval (APA-194). Bob received a Good Conduct Medal for his service. Bob started working in the Strip Mines with his dad at the age of 12 and continued to work there much of his adult life as a Welder and Mechanic. Bob was a Welder at Weirton Steel Corporation 1964 – 1997 and was a Senior Welder when he retired. In 1969, Bob established, operated and maintained Amos Welding as President and CEO for over thirty years. There was nothing Bob could not weld or repair and was known by many for his wonderful talents as a welder. Bob retired in 1997, but nothing could stop him. He would become a Bus Driver for the Hancock County Schools in 1999 and would drive for almost a decade. All the kids and parents adored Bob. Even his own grandchildren Remington, Hunter and Hayley were proud to ride their Papa’s Bus. Bob also received his Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) Security Clearance for the CIA in Virginia. However, Bob would not take the job, so he could devote all his time to his wife Skip as her Parkinson’s Disease progressed. Bob had many wonderful qualities, but out of all of them, he was the absolute best, loving and devoted husband to his wife Skip. He treated Skip like a princess and never wanted her to work their entire marriage, so she could enjoy being home with their family. Bob and Skip were happily married for 57 years until the twenty - year battle with Parkinson’s took his loving bride on February 22, 2021. Bob was the best husband, daddy, papa, and great papa. Bob fought a courageous battle with Dementia for thirteen years. Bob never complained, always smiled and joked around with the staff that cared for him. He will always be remembered by all who knew him for his kind, loving and compassionate heart and his sense of humor. Bob was a true gentleman.
