Rosalyn Sammons Kummer, 87, of Evans City, Butler County, passed away on Sunday evening, March 6, 2022 at her home.
She was born in Union City, Erie County, and was the daughter of Dana and Jean Watson Sammons.
She earned degrees from Penn State University and Purdue University in Home Economics, and a Master of Divinity from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. After teaching high school and college home economics, she became a Presbyterian minister in 1976. A trailblazer, she was the first woman to be ordained in the Beaver-Butler Presbytery, and was truly God’s good and faithful servant.
Rosalyn went on to serve five local churches in her career – Crestview Presbyterian Church for nearly 24 years, and then St. John’s United Church of Christ, Harlansburg, Eastbrook and Camp Run Presbyterian churches – performing hundreds of baptisms, weddings and funerals which continued long after her retirements.
Her greatest gift was her love and compassion for others – she was able to connect with anyone she met and was genuinely interested in their lives. She had a knack of making everyone feel like they were the most important person in the room.
She loved learning and sharing her knowledge; was proud of her Scottish heritage; hitch-hiked across Europe in the 1950’s; and enjoyed working in her garden and sharing her produce with friends and neighbors. She deeply cherished her home at Kummer Farm, and it was a true blessing that she was able to remain there.
She is survived by brother Fred (Barbara) Sammons; sisters-in-law Elaine (Robert) Woller of Latrobe; Linda (Alan) Geiger of Seven Lakes, N.C.; son Scott (Anne) Kummer of Gibsonia; daughter Jean Kummer of Evans City; grandchildren Lane Kaye and Nolan Lee Kummer; and many, many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers George, James and Calvin Sammons; and husband of 55 years, Lee Kummer.
