Raymond Melnyk, age 93, of Marshall Twp., Mars, passed away on Friday afternoon, October 20, 2023 at AHN Grove City Hospital, unexpectedly of natural causes.
Born in Ambridge, PA on November 8, 1929, he was the son of the late John and Mary Susko Melnyk.
He had served in the United States Air Force Reserves.
Ray had been a crane operator at Bethlehem Steel in Leetsdale and then worked in the maintenance department at UPMC Passavant Hospital.
He was a Life Member of the Marshall Twp. Volunteer Fire Department, where he joined in 1957. He had served nine years as its Chief. He also was a member of the Marshall Twp. Parks and Recreation Committee, the Warrendale Baseball Association and served on the Board of the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Association.
He loved to play softball and golf, enjoyed the Steelers and high school and pro-football.
Surviving are his son, Raymond "R.J." Melnyk and his wife, Marla of Marshall Twp.,, his grandchildren, Maxwell, Melina and Makenna, his sisters-in-law, Shirley Melnyk of Edgeworth, Debbie Mentel and her husband, Harry of Warrendale, his brother-in-law, Wayne Kovac (Sherry) of Evans City and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Luvia A. Koegler Melnyk, who he married on October 2, 1954 and who died on June 8, 2017, by his brothers, Michael, Peter, John and Frank Melnyk, by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Barbara Koegler and his sister-in-law, Sharon Kovac.
Friends will be received at the McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home, Inc. 238 Crowe Ave. Mars, PA on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. Services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the funeral home, with his sister-in-law, Rev. Debbie Mentel, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Warrendale, PA.
