Dr. Maribel McKelvy went to be with her Heavenly Father on March 7, 2022. She was 94.
Dr. Mckelvy was born on April 7, 1927 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania to Henry Easson and Sarah Elizabeth McKelvy, spent her childhood in the Carrick neighborhood of Pittsburgh, and graduated from Carrick High School in 1944.
She obtained her undergraduate degree from Geneva College and attended the Womens Medical College of Pennsylvania, now Drexel University College of Medicine, receiving her Medical Doctorate in 1954, following with a pediatric residency at Childrens Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Dr. McKelvy opened her Pediatric Practice on Bakerstown Road in Gibsonia where she treated children for 45 years with her sister Vida Brown working alongside as a Registered Nurse. Over these many years, Dr. McKelvy was the pediatrician to generations of children in our community. She offered free or greatly reduced fees for medical care to many families in the church and to the underserved children in our community. Dr. McKelvy was an inspiration to women seeking a professional career in a time when it was very rare.
Dr. McKelvy was a deacon of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in North Hills for decades and a founding member of the Grace Reformed Presbyterian Church in Gibsonia. She served the church both locally and at the denominational level. Her beautiful alto voice heard in the singing of the psalms will be missed. She was also active at the Hetherton RP church in northern Michigan, the church where her father was raised. Maribel purchased a cabin there, on Little Bear Lake, so that she and her parents and sisters could be near the family on the old farm. She opened up the cabin to many friends, family, and church members over the years.
Dr. McKelvy was an avid reader, gardener, water skier, and artist. She will be remembered for her generosity with her time and money, along with her principled speech and actions peppered with a dry humor.
She is survived by her sisters Vida Brown, Janice McKelvy, and Linda Porter.
Dr. McKelvy was also known lovingly as Aunt Maribel to Clyde Brown, David Brown, Vida Grace Brown, Elisabeth Abel, Deborah Joya, Matthew Molnar, Sändor Molnar and Emily Drogowski and to her many great nieces and nephews.
