Marc Metcalfe, M.D. Obituary

Marc F. Metcalfe, M.D., of Mars, passed unexpectedly on April 8, 2026. He was born on June 19, 1958 in Burtonwood, England, during his father’s service in the United States Air Force, which moved the family to many places including Florida, Montana, Texas, England, and Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents Frank Metcalfe and Madeline Metcalfe.

Marc grew up in Braceville, Ohio, a small rural community just outside of Newton Falls, Ohio. He was a standout, graduating near the top of his class at LaBrae High School in Leavittsburg, Ohio. A compliment to his academic strengths, he also demonstrated athleticism in track, holding the school mile record for a period.

He attended Gannon College in Erie, Pennsylvania for pre-med and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio for medical school. He enrolled in the USAF as part of his medical education and early career path, leading to practicing medicine as an anesthesiologist in the Pittsburgh, PA area for almost all of his career. Later in his tenure he shared his deep expertise as a respected educator for young practitioners entering the field of anesthesia.

Marc is survived by his wife, Katherine Metcalfe, stepdaughters, Char and Lizzie of Mars, PA, four daughters, his siblings, Corinne Metcalfe of Columbus, Ohio, Annette Downing (Scott) of Hiram, Ohio, and Paul Metcalfe (Gail) of Solon, Ohio and his canine companion and shadow, Teddy.

In his free time Marc enjoyed bicycling, motorcycling, photography, computers, travel, and the outdoors. He was also quite skilled as a handyman. While he was quite accomplished in these areas and a wealth of information, Marc was predisposed to assist others willingly and effortlessly in matters complex to others, but seemingly simple for him.

He bicycled locally, and occasionally rode long distances, traveling across several states at a time, planning trips with a true adventure spirit. In recent years he bicycled the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) from Pittsburgh, PA to Washington DC, a 340 mile gravel route through the Appalachian mountains.

The bicycling adventures started when he was 18, bikepacking with his brother and his brother’s friend to the Buffalo, NY area and back in a week, about 400 miles, camping along the way. A similar bike trip was masterminded by him 5 years later to Niagara Falls with his brother, round trip in a week for about 450 miles.

More recently, he explored large swaths of the country on his adventure motorcycle, riding popular week-long Backcountry Discovery Routes (BDRs) visiting some locations long on a bucket list. He also attended a variety of multi-day adventure motorcycle events, or just explored what looked like a fun route in southern Ohio or West Virginia. Some of the motorcycling he shared with his wife Katherine, a motorcycle enthusiast herself. He would draw others into these adventures which created lifetime memories for all involved.

He will be deeply missed by friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to BC3 Education Foundation, memo:  In memory of Marc Metcalfe, MD, PO Box 1203, Butler PA 16003.
