Evelyn (O'Brien) Darcy

Evelyn O’Brien Darcy, age 97, of Cranberry Twp., formerly of East Hanover, NJ, passed away on Sunday evening, July 10, 2022 at Sherwood Oaks in Cranberry Twp.

Born on June 29, 1925 in Jersey City, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Madaline Fullerton O’Brien.

Evelyn was a 1947 graduate of College of St. Elizabeth’s, now known as Saint Elizabeth University, where she played on the Women’s Varsity Basketball Team for four years.

While living in East Hanover, Evelyn was the librarian for seventeen years at Florham Park Public Library.  She was a member of St. Kilian Church in Cranberry Twp. and previously an active member of St. Rose of Lima Church in New Jersey, where she had started their library.

Evelyn enjoyed reading, sewing, smocking, and quilting. She had also spent many years doing volunteer work.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Ellen (Harry) Austin, III of Wexford; three grandchildren, Harry (Vanessa) Austin, IV, Brian (Alex) Austin, and Colleen (Dean) Austin Smalligan; two great-grandsons, Hudson and Wyatt Austin; her sister-in-law, Elinor O’Brien; and her nieces and nephews, Ann O’Brien, Maureen Fallon, Timothy O’Brien, Patricia Scott, and John O’Brien.

Preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Joseph Darcy, a brother, Lawrence O’Brien, and a nephew, Dr. Michael O’Brien.

Younger brother Larry, always credited Evelyn as his childhood "protector" and the "smartest woman" he ever knew.

Friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Kilian Church, 7076 Franklin Rd, Cranberry Twp, PA 16066 on Saturday, July 23, 2022 at 10:00 AM, with Fr. Charles Bober, pastor, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint Elizabeth University, Office of Institutional Advancement, 2 Convent Rd, Morristown, NJ 07960 or The Sherwood Oaks Fund, Sherwood Oaks, 100 Norman Drive, Cranberry Township, PA. 16066.  Please note on the check in honor of Evelyn O’Brien Darcy.
