Eric Justin “EJ” Wheeler, age 57 of Mars, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, April 10, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Joseph Wheeler and Janise Wheeler Bentley.
EJ, as he was affectionately known, was a 1986 graduate of Mars Area High School, where he excelled in baseball, basketball, and football. His talent on the football field led him to West Virginia University, where he played linebacker for the Mountaineers under Coach Don Nehlen. Among the highlights of his athletic career were appearances in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame, the Gator Bowl, and the Sun Bowl—moments he cherished throughout his life. After college, EJ continued his love of sports by playing baseball for Eagle County as a power hitter and third baseman. In recognition of his achievements, he was inducted into the Mars Area High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
A devoted outdoorsman, EJ found joy and peace in fishing. He spent memorable days on the water with his father and friends in Canada and at Lake Wilhelm. His favorite fishing spots, however, were The Pond and Lake Erie, where he spent countless hours alongside the love of his life and fiancée of 28 years, Jamie Perkins. EJ also loved relaxing outside overlooking “the shoe”, listening to music, and following anything related to sports—especially his beloved WVU Mountaineers.
EJ is survived by his fiancée, Jamie Perkins; his stepfather, Tim Bentley; his sister, Kimberly Rovnan (George); his stepbrother, Tim Bentley (Holly); and his stepsister, Megan Graham (Scott). He leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews—Matthew (Karesa), Courtney (Daniel), Kelsey (Jim), Brittany, Kelly, Isaiah, Abbie, Timmy, Michael, Christopher, Jackson, and Kierstyn—as well as his beloved cousins Tom, Bonnie, and Kerry.
EJ and Jamie shared a deep love for their dachshunds, Reesie and Dashie. Though they never had children, their dogs were their kids with fur. EJ is now reunited with Harley, Maxie, and Buggie, who surely greeted him at the gates of heaven.
EJ’s happiest moments were spent with the friends he considered family. He treasured every fish fry, holiday celebration, sporting event, and gathering filled with laughter and good company. His warmth, loyalty, and love for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Friends will be received at the McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home, Inc. 238 Crowe Ave. Mars, PA on Monday, April 13, 2026 from 5-7:30 PM. Prayers will follow at 7:30 PM at the funeral home.
