Howard E. Schwan, age 89, of Forest City, NC., formerly of Mars, went home to the Lord on September 15, 2017 at Fair Haven in Forest City.

A beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather, uncle and friend, was born on February 3, 1928 in New London, Wisconsin.  He was the son of the late William and Mabel Beckman Schwan. He was a Korean War Veteran, Army Field Artillery from 1951-1953.  He was also a truck driver and worked at J. & L. Steel in Aliquippa, PA for 30 years until his retirement.

He attended St. John Lutheran Church in Mars, PA until he moved to the South permanently in 2013, where he attended Lake Lure Baptist Church until his homegoing.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife, Sarah (Sadie) Jane Reid Schwan, originally of Dunbar, PA, a son,  Joseph “Joey” Schwan and his wife, Debra Riggsby Schwan of Gypsum, CO., a daughter, Julie Schwan Hartzog and her husband, Laurie Thomas “Tommy” Hartzog, III of Lake Lure, NC., four grandchildren, Nolan Joseph Schwan, Kelsie Dannon Schwan Irish and her husband, Jeremy Irish, all of Colorado, Logan Reid Hartzog and Sonora Rose Hartzog of Lake Lure, NC.

Also surviving a sister, Marilyn J. Lutz of Forest City, NC., brothers, William C. Schwan and Robert L. Schwan and his wife, Thelma Fountain Schwan of Garrettsville, Ohio.

In addition, Howard had many nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and loved ones in WI, OH, PA and in NC, his home part and/or full time for over 15 years.

There was a private family burial service at the home place of Tommy and Julie Hartzog, with a memorial service to be announced at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Mars VFW Post 7505 in Mars, PA or to the Hospice of the Carolina Foothills.
